15 years of Search Experience
Back in 1995, when Yahoo was a small directory of Web pages, our cofounder Julio Fernandez was working for The Miami Herald during the day and helping college newspapers create their online editions at night. Mr. Fernandez would pick up the phone to inform Yahoo of the latest online stories and Yahoo would call asking for the latest newspapers to add to their index of publications.
By early 1998, over 250 college newspapers were online and Mr. Fernandez saw the need to provide college newspapers with original content, online advertising and promotions. He left The Miami Herald and with his wife Sherry, they created the first national content syndication and online advertising network targeting the collegiate market. Bankrate.com acquired their company in November 1998 and after a 1999 IPO, the company was sold to Colleges.com in 2000.
In the late 1990s, an efficient way to drive traffic to the different college newspaper sites was by purchasing Goto.com pay per click ads. This was before Google was running ads. By 2001, Goto.com became Overture Services which was acquired by Yahoo two years later.
Mr. Fernandez continued to work with all of the major search engines and by 2005 he was appointed to the Google Technology Council. The Tech Council is a group of 14 search marketing evangelists from leading Fortune 500 companies who met quarterly with Google to test the latest Google products and provide feedback to Google engineers.
With over 15 years of search experience, the Fernandez’ decided to move back to Northwest Florida to be near family and help small business owners with the latest search engine strategies, mobile phone marketing and social media optimization.
